Over 400 delegates from 34 Countries are meeting in Krems, Austria to shape a new food system. They are participating in the first European Forum for Food Sovereignty named after the legendary Malian woman "Nyéléni", whose spirit inspired the international food sovereignty forum held in Mali in 2007.

We are a broad range of organisations -see list in "who are we"- – who are concerned with the future of food and agriculture in Europe. As in other regions in the world, the number of people and organizations that are working towards a fairer, more inclusive and sustainable food system is growing. Many of them are actively engaged in building a viable alternative to the current food production, distribution and consumption - from the bottom up. This new system of food and agriculture is firmly grounded on equity, the universal right to food, good governance and transparency.

A wide range of renewed activities such as increasing local food production, local markets, local procurement, seed swaps and so on has been emerging and growing across Europe. In addition new movements, such as the Transition Town movement, GM-free regions and national and local debates on food policy show increasing public support for another form of food and agriculture.

What is Food Souvereignty?

Declaration of the first forum for Food Souvereignty in Mali 2007

Nyéléni Village, Sélingué, Mali

We, more than 500 representatives from more than 80 countries, of organizations of peasants/family farmers, artisanal fisherfolk, indigenous peoples, landless peoples, rural workers, migrants, pastoralists, forest communities, women, youth, consumers and environmental and urban movements have gathered together in the village of Nyéléni in Sélingué, Mali to strengthen a global movement for food sovereignty. We are doing this, brick by brick, as we live here in huts constructed by hand in the local tradition, and eat food that is produced and prepared by the Sélingué community. We give our collective endeavor the name "Nyléni" as a tribute to and inspiration from a legendary Malian peasant woman who farmed and fed her peoples well.

What are the goals of the Forum?

Goals and Objectives

The aim is to strengthen the movement for food sovereignty in Europe. At the first Nyeleni Forum in 2007, 500 Delegates from 80 different nations met in Selingué, Mali to strengthen the worldwide movement for food sovereignty. The Nyeleni – Europe Forum 2011 is a next step in this process – bringing actors working towards Food Sovereignty in Europe together in order to share, build and develop common strategies for Food Sovereignty in Europe.

The key goals of the forum:

Strengthening, broadening and building a movement for Food sovereignty in Europe by;

  1. Reinforcing our common understanding of what Food Sovereignty means in Europe

  2. Identifying common challenges and obstacles to Food Sovereignty in Europe

  3. Constructing common strategies to make Food Sovereignty a reality in Europe

Objectives:

  • Strengthen local actors for food sovereignty

  • Build a sense of common purpose and understanding, as well as a joint agenda for action

  • Celebrate the struggle for food sovereignty already underway in Europe

  • Inspire and motivate people and organizations to work together

Based on key values of trust, transparency and participation
